My FAB Years is a definitive 'behind the scenes history' of the great British sci-fi television and films of the late '50s, '60s, and '70s - shows like Supercar, Fireball XL5, Stingray, Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet, and Joe 90, all featuring the cast of puppet characters brought to life in 'Supermarionation' - the brain child of the Gerry & Sylvia Anderson winning team.

The new audio version of Sylvia's best-selling book is written and read by her, giving a personal touch to her very personal story.

My FAB Years (Audible Audio Edition) Sylvia Anderson Whiteroom Music Ltd Books

The highlight of this book is the great (and plentiful) behind-the-scenes photos, mostly in b/w that tell the story of the Andersons' company and the production of their timeless shows.

There is not a whole lot of technical detail regarding the production that hasn't already been revealed by earlier books and websites. What this book does cover in some depth, however, is the extended afterlife and public attention that shows like Thunderbirds have attained - testament to the great care lavished on the original productions.

The only serious criticism of this book is the occasional lapse in proof-reading. Ed White on Gemini made the first spacewalk during the Thunderbirds production timeframe, it was Armstrong on Apollo that was the first moonwalker, long after Thunderbirds was completed. The model that Sylvia is standing next to on page 32 is Thunderbird 3, not TB1.

Buy it for the pictures and the unique perspective of someone who is very proud of her accomplishments in family entertainment, and rightly so. The techniques and innovation pioneered by the Andersons and their talented crew have been emulated, but seldom matched in the thirty-some years since their heyday.

My FAB Years (Audible Audio Edition) Sylvia Anderson Whiteroom Music Ltd Books Reviews

If you're an Anderson fan then you may like this book, but be advised Sylvia jumps around from topic to topic. The writing style is very disjointed. If you're on a limited budget there are many better books about Gerry Anderson's creations than this one though.
To be honest - just a rehash of the 1991 book 'Yes, M'Lady' in a larger format.

Not much new, several mistakes... page 32 is a clanger Photo Credit "Standing next to TB1" - it is TB3.

Page 17 Sylvia seems to imply she thought up the idea of Supercar... "I had written some children's stories - and presented him (Lew Grade) with our next project Supercar"...), then page 18 she states Reg Hill and Gerry thought it up. All a tad confusing, with statements repeated several times over various chapters.

Some good photographic content, but absolute embarrassing recognition of the 2005 Thunderbirds The Movie over 16 pages (Universal's biggest bomb in the last 12 years). Her views of the marriage break up are boring. Fans have heard it all (both sides). There's no points to be won by reading about it.
Out of 10 - a 6.5. Dennis Nicholson
Lots of noise from the most bitter woman who ever lived. She evidently was the only person in history whose husband cheated on her. Oh wait, that's right, Gerry cheated with HER before they got married. Her nastiness ruins what might otherwise be a mildly enjoyable read.
One half of the Anderson duo, Sylvia Anderson, always creatively attached to the symbiotic Gerry Anderson gave the world "Supermarionation". Many kids in England in the 50's clamored together and had their eyes glued to the likes of Fireball XL5 and a whole barrage of TV shows created by the duo till their apex creation Space 1999. They put out some serious science fiction ideas with their marionettes with their signature strings and stiff character presentation, but we all forgot that with the strong stories and fun escapism. Not much is known about Sylvia, Gerry basked in the glory. Now we can glimpse the true scope of Sylvia's contribution to the series loved by many for over 50 years. She was not only pigeon holed to only children's fare, she got involved in many other film projects in those years, some famous and some not so famous.
Great book and interesting to see what Sylvia's view of the whole Anderson Empire was as it was all happening. Her contribution to all the great shows from "Twizzle" to "Space1999" was considerable and she is often forgotten while eclipsed by the shadow of her ex-husband, Gerry Anderson. The book is large and contains many rare photos of the people who made Thunderbirds go as well as all the other Supermarionation programs most of us grew up with.
I just bought this book because I wanted to know more info on Supermarionation. It has lots of pictures, but very few "how we did it" sections. Her writing style is very difficult to follow at times, and goes off into areas that are not always informational. It really bothered me that the chapters often were made up photos that did not deal at all with what she was talking about. It seems that the first part of the book had been written previously, and the second part was just her talking about herself and could have been left out. For it's pictures, the book is worth a spot in your library, but there are probably better books on the subject out there.
